HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR NEW SPACE
Stay tuned for information about upcoming hard hat tours!
New Black-Box Theatre
With seating capacity of just 25-35, our current black box theatre sells out for almost every performance, with substantial unmet ticket demand. Our new black box theatre will have more stage area and will seat up to 70. With 13 mainstage productions each year, this will make a huge difference: we can mount more shows with large casts; parents can see their kids perform multiple times; more prospective participants can see shows; tech students will have larger sets and additional sound and lighting to design and implement.
Open Source Studio
Our existing small black box theatre will become our new Open Source Studio. Since 2013, our Open Source Theatre Project has encouraged and supported unique theatre endeavors. Now, the project can be fully realized. We will dedicate this space to fostering the creative work of members of our community - adults, students, improv groups, and schools. Offering space rentals at greatly subsidized rates, we can provide accessible space for creating art. This space will also provide a comfortable, larger home for our Improv Comedy Nights and other Studio Performances (currently housed in our rehearsal room).
New Workshop and Costume/Dressing Space
Highwood’s new space will include a larger workshop for set construction, located adjacent to our new theatre. We will double the size of our workshop space, allowing us to construct larger sets and set pieces for our performances and for local schools. Moving our existing workshop will free up space for much needed dressing rooms and expansion of our costume department. These changes will tremendously benefit our tech students and our adult and student actors - over 120 last year alone - and will allow us to welcome more school students for field trips to Highwood, where they can explore all aspects of theatre in a hands-on environment.
New and Expanded Rehearsal Rooms
Like our performances that consistently sell out, our classes and productions are filling up. With a record breaking cast of 24 for Thoroughly Modern Millie this winter, our single rehearsal room is no longer big enough or sufficient. With this expansion, we will gain an additional rehearsal room and can expand our existing one. We will also add mirrors and a new dance floor. This means we can increase the number of classes we offer and students we serve, while maintaining our small group and individual focus.
The expansion will greatly improve the ability of our patrons to more easily experience all that Highwood offers, including access to additional restrooms and concession service areas, With theatres located on both floors, we plan to install a wheelchair lift to allow easier access for all patrons and participants.
