Roughly one month before the rehearsal process is scheduled to begin, the recruitment/audition process for the production will take place. Between the auditions and the start of rehearsals, Directing Fellows will meet weekly with Highwood staff members to continue the planning process for rehearsals, as well as planning for the production’s technical needs and working with sound, lighting, set, prop, and costume designers.
Depending on the production, there will be a 6-8 week rehearsal period. Rehearsals will occur roughly 3 times per week (weekday evenings or weekends). During the rehearsal process, the Directing Fellow will meet before/after many rehearsals with Highwood staff members for mentoring, progress updates, and other production-related discussion.
The final week of the rehearsal process is tech week - tech rehearsals will occur on 3-4 evenings prior to the opening of the production. Productions will run for one or two weekends of performances.
Following the performances, the Directing Fellow will have a debriefing session with Highwood staff members about the process.

The Highwood Theatre is honored to announce the continuation of its Student Directing Fellowship for the 2017-2018 season. The fellowship gives a small number of students each year the opportunity to propose, plan, and direct a production within Highwood’s Students’ Theatre. Separate from Highwood’s regular After School Production Company, the Directing Fellowship will give selected Directors an incredible opportunity to create their production in a process mimicking that of professional theatre, while giving selected student actors a chance to hone their skills, rehearse, and perform in a carefully crafted production.
Student Directing Fellows will meet regularly with Highwood Theatre staff members, serving as mentors and advisors about all aspects of their production.
Selected productions will take place in The Highwood Theatre’s 2017-2018 Season. Our 2017-2018 season theme is “Off Your Rocker: Redefining and Defying the Status Quo”. Proposed productions should somehow fit into that theme.
Here are some more details about the process and time commitment for selected directing fellows:
3/28/17 - Applications Open
